What Are Cane Bolts?

When you open or close a gate, you would expect one side to hold in place so you can easily latch the gate properly. If it could not do that, you would end up trying to balance the gate and centre the latch and its hook so it will lock in place. Such a hassle can take up time and patience. Plus, without anything to hold the gate in place, it is easy to swing open the gate even when it is latched, making it easy for intruders to intrude. Even pets from inside the premise could easily make their way out if they learn to lean against the gate, which would then open. However, there is an invention that addresses such problems, and that solution is what is known as cane bolts.

A cane bolt is also known as a drop rod, because its appearance is similar to a cane, and you simply need to drop it in place for it to function. What it is actually is a simple gate latch that is made out of a long rod with a curved handle, and is attached to a gate by fasteners.

The mechanics of this rod is very simple actually, using gravity to operate by. In order to secure the gate in position, all you would need to do is to turn the curved handle of the bolt out of the bracket holding it and then into the clearing. This will result in the end of the bolt's rod to drop into place as gravity pulls its weight down while it is held in place the fasteners. There is usually a hole that would be drilled on the ground where it should land to indicate the position the gate would best be secured at for an easy latch. On the other hand, to open it, you simply reverse the process by lifting the curved handle of the bolt upwards and set it on the bracket. This would free the gate from its position.

Whether for large estate gates or small wood walk gates, cane bolts come in handy.
