Dog Bolting Out of the House - How to Stop It

Does your dog dash out the door and are you afraid he'll get hit by a car or that you'll never see him again? If this describes you, here are some tips you can use to retrain your dog to stop this dangerous habit.

Most dogs are very excited to get to go outside, if they are confined for most of the day. Being let outside means that they get to run and explore and stretch their muscles, but they are not aware of the dangers outside, which is where you come in.

If you do catch your dog bolting out of the house make them come back to the door and sit until they calm down. Only after they have calmed down, then let them go.

Train your dog to stay in the doorway and wait until you walk out to the sidewalk and signal that it is okay for them to go outside.

If your dog is too anxious to even think about listening to your commands you may have to use a leash. Keep them on a leash until they have learned that they have to listen to your commands if they want the reward of running outside the house.

Some people get around this problem by simply building a fence around the yard. While this seems to be a good solution to the problem, eventually there will be a time when your dog will be faced with an open door to the world. It is at the moment that you will be glad you took the time to properly train your dog.
